  As part of the Process Engine feature (due this year) we intend to allow scripts to run when records are saved: such scripts can set or calculate field values during the save process.

  Hi Bola,

  This idea is slightly different to what you suggest in your comment. Would you please be kind enough to log a separate idea, titled something like:
  "Configurable Sequence / Customisable Pattern algorithm for generation of Object References & Custom Fields".

  This idea refers to read-only views e.g. you could set up a column that calculates the gross margin by performing some maths on unit price and unit cost etc.

  This will be useful for my client as they would like to generate unique identifiers based on the record detail. eg [RegionCode]+[IDENTITY NUMBER]+[EmployeeInitials]
  gives something like ***-36000-BAG
